two-story library environment. After sharing my thumbnails with the directors, they suggested transforming it into an infinitely stretched magical library, abandoned and lost to time. Once this direction was approved, I moved into rendering. Environment Rendering - I established the background first, focusing on shelves, drawers, and scroll storage. From there, I layered in overgrown roots, vines, ruins, and magical foliage to reinforce the sense of decay and enchantment. With the setting in place, I introduced the focal point — the central character. Character Development - My first render emphasized detailed fur and facial realism. However, director feedback noted this aged the character and shifted the tone toward “menacing,” which did not suit the brief. In response: I softened and blended the fur for a youthful look. (Render 2) Enlarged pupils and adjusted the beak to create an expression of awe and wonder. (Render 3) Applied magical effects around the orb and subtle reflections in the eyes to heighten narrative focus. (Render 4) Props & Magical Effects - Initially, I planned multiple flying books, but I reduced this to two books and two scrolls to avoid distracting from the character. Inspired by Blizzard splash art, I rendered them with a slightly “chunky” stylization and individualized each with its own magical aura. After feedback that the effects were overpowering, I rebalanced brightness and intensity, allowing the character to remain the central focus. Outcome The final illustration successfully blended an expansive, abandoned magical environment with a character whose expression communicates wonder.
